Shriners Hospital installs low-dose imaging system

Shriners Hospital for Children, Philadelphia, has installed the EOS System, a low-dose 2-D and 3-D imaging system. It is the fourth installation within the Shriners Hospitals for Children network.

“EOS’ extremely low-dose system provides high quality 2-D and 3-D imaging that enables physicians to provide the care, attention and thoroughness necessary in the treatment of children with scoliosis or limb deformities,” Amer Samdani, MD, chief of surgery, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Philadelphia, stated in a press release.

About 68% of Philadelphia Shriners patients are treated for spinal conditions that require frequent imaging, and scoliosis in particular requires regular screening over many years.

The EOS system provides full-body images of patients in a natural standing or seated position, while delivering a radiation dose nine times lower than computed radiography X-ray and 20 times lower than basic CT scans, according to the release.

“The EOS System offers unparalleled benefits in terms of reduced radiation dose, quicker scanning procedures and diagnostic content, and we are pleased to help make this technology more accessible to Shriners patients,” Samdani said.
