De Roy was the fastest in history for the below-knee amputee category with a time of 2:57:06. This was his first marathon.

“This spring I started training for the Reykjavik Marathon, a plan that was originally meant to improve my health but resulted in a world record,” De Roy stated in a press release. “It just goes to show that anyone can work on improving their health and fitness, and enjoy a life without limitations.”

De Roy’s record is 38 seconds faster than the previous record, set by Rick Ball of Canada.
