OPAF brings First Swing, First Volley to Denver

Denver residents recently had a chance to experience adaptive recreation through the First Swing Learn to Golf and First Volley tennis clinics.

The events are part of the Orthotic & Prosthetic Activities Foundation (OPAF)’s First Clinics series.

First Swing Learn to Golf was led by W.C. Fields and Bob Tipton, PT, both National Amputee Golf Association (NAGA) First Swing instructors, and assisted by Bobby Mourino. The clinic provided a full-day event including classroom and driving range experience. In addition to the afternoon session for people with adaptive sport needs, a morning session was offered for local therapists, golf teaching pros and anyone with an interest in adaptive recreation.

Ed Conrad was a first-time participant in the clinic.

“I can’t express to you how grateful we are for our experience today. Today, my dad took his first golf swing after 15 years post-injury. [It was] priceless,” Elizabeth Conrad Posey, Conrad’s daughter, said in a press release.

OPAF also offered a First Volley tennis clinic that evening for more than a dozen amputees and wheelchair players with local First Volley instructors Frank Adams and Stefan Blair at Garland Park Tennis Courts. Each participant was given individual skills and drills to practice throughout the clinic.

The clinics were offered thanks to funds raised through the Ed Halperin Memorial Golf Outing, according to the release.
