ORLANDO, Fla. – Bruce “Mac” McClellan, CPO, LPO, FISPO, FAAOP, president of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, gave the opening remarks at the American Academy Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium, here.

McClellan discussed the importance of adequate patient care, stating that every practitioner should have perspective, passion and purpose when dealing with patients.

“Our responsibility to our patients is huge, and we should never take it lightly or for granted,” McClellan said.

He also proposed a principle for practitioners to consider when treating patients: maximize the potential.

“Only by each of us providing the best possible care should every individual we treat have a chance at achieving their maximum potential of function,” McClellan said. “But in order to provide this level of care, you must first maximize your potential by reading, learning from others, attending seminars and expanding your horizons.”

During the opening remarks, recipients of the Academy Awards were also honored. Donald G. Shurr, PT, CPO, was awarded the Titus-Ferguson Award, a lifetime achievement award recognizing an orthotic or prosthetic professional whose contributions have made a significant impact on the growth and development of the O&P profession. From 1986 until his retirement in 2012, Shurr managed a privately-owned O&P service within the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He also published more than 50 scientific articles, one textbook and countless other chapters and editorials.

James H. Campbell, PhD, CO, FAAOP received the Distinguished Practitioner Award. Campbell, the executive vice president of Becker Orthopedic, was recognized for his personal dedication to advancing the O&P field.

Also recognized were Christina Skoski, MD, Mohamed Amin Award for Humanitarian Service; Keith M. Smith, CO, LO, FAAOP, Clinical Creativity Award; Gary M. Berke, MS, CP, FAAOP, Clinical Commitment Award; Mark D. Geil, PhD, Research Award; and Arlene Gillis, CP, LPO, Med, FAAOP, Outstanding Educator Award.
