One Limb for Life campaign seeks to end NY prosthetic limb restrictions

Progressive O&P, based in Albertson, N.Y., announced it is leading a campaign to change the “one prosthesis per limb per lifetime” restriction under New York state’s benchmark health insurance plan.

The One Limb for Life campaign is supported by groups including the National Association for the Advancement of Orthotics and Prosthetics and the Amputee Coalition, and its online petition has gained more than 5,000 signatures in just over 2 weeks, according to a press release.

Dan Bastian, co-owner of Progressive O&P, a certified prosthetist and transfemoral amputee, plans to meet with New York state legislators to bring the issue to their attention.

“I would not be able to run my business, employ all these people and coach my kid’s teams if I was limited to the first prosthetic I received,” Bastian said in the release.
